Academic Interests

I enjoy studying and teaching the bible and its interpretation with the mind of the Church, both as an academic endeavor and as a necessary ecclesial task. Of particular interest to me are the Canonical Gospels, their interrelationship, and their relationship to the broader Canon of Scripture, especially through a Christological lens. I am currently working on a couple of projects:

  • Jesus’ Last Supper in (its) context
In this project I conduct a historical-critical and theological exploration of Jesus’ last supper, engaging in particular with two recent publications: Brant Pitre’s Jesus and the Last Supper (Eerdmans: 2015) and Sir Colin Humphreys’ The Mystery of the Last Supper (Cambridge: 2011).
  • The Lord whom the disciples loved
Inspired by Richard Hays’ Reading Backwards (Baylor University Press: 2017) this longer term project explores the four canonical gospels’ presentations of Jesus. Part of this project includes the weekly Living in the Word Seminars on the Gospels (see Seminars below).
  • "Starting with Moses and all the Prophets ..." (Lk 24:27) - Typology, Intertextuality, and the unity of Scripture: a Catholic approach. Drawing both on the rich Catholic tradition of interpretation and on recent development in intertextual research in scripture, this project explores the scriptres of the Old Testament through a Christological lens. Part of this project includes the weekly Living in the Word Seminars on books of the Old Testament, and the weekly Treasures of the Faith seminars on the Church Fathers (see Seminars below)
